Phonics

This week we are focussing on blending.

Blending is when we sound out the individual sounds and say them quickly to make the word.

e.g. c-a-t, cat

We have now learnt all of the Year R sounds! We will now be focusing on blending and segmenting the sounds to help us build words and sentences.

How can I help my child with their phonics?

  • Listen for sounds in words every day and sound the whole word out slowly.
  • Use the 'Letters and Sounds Book' to record objects for each sound.
  • Hold up an object and ask questions such as "What sound does this start with?"
  • Play games such as I-spy using phonic sounds, e.g. I spy with my little eye something beginning with (say letter sound).
  • Play a blending game e.g. you sound out the word c-a-t and they have to say the word (start with simple three letter words.
  • Use the letter name and the sound it makes.
  • We use 'pure' sounds when sounding out the letters, i.e. the shortest sound possible.  For examples of how to do this see Mr Thorne's phonics http://mrthorne.com/home/phonics/introduction/.
