Addition and Subtraction

Please see the below videos for ways to support addition and subtraction for Year 1 at home. Try out the strategy you feel most confident in.

In Year 1, children are taught to:

  • Read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving addition (+), subtraction (–) and equals (=) signs
  • Represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20
  • Add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20 including zero
  • Solve one-step problems that involve addition and subtraction, using concrete objects and pictorial representations, and missing number problems, such as 7 = ___ – 9

So please do not feel like you to have to go into higher 2 digit numbers as this is covered in Year 2. Focus on becoming confident with numbers to 20, recognising number bonds and building up the confidence using different strategies.

Numberlines are easy to draw yourselves and use what counting resources you have around the house. You can use counters, playdough blobs, coins and even small toys/figurines.

I hope you find these useful.
