At Marchwood Infant School, the fundamental British values of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs are deeply embedded in our Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage One curriculum. These values are actively promoted through our school systems, daily collective worship, Positive Behaviour Policy, and our strong Christian ethos, which places love, hope, and courage at the heart of everything we do.

The Department for Education emphasises the importance of promoting British values in schools. We embrace this with a deep sense of love for each child, hope in their potential, and the courage to guide them in becoming compassionate, responsible citizens.

We reinforce these values regularly through the following approaches:

Democracy

Children are taught to listen with love and respect, recognising the value of every voice. Through School Council elections, children learn about fairness, representation, and the courage to speak up for others. They make decisions together, such as choosing role play themes, and express their views in RE, PSHE, and Heartsmart lessons. We also listen to the voices of children, staff, and parents through regular surveys, fostering a community built on hopeful collaboration.

Rule of Law

From their first days at school, children learn to distinguish right from wrong, guided by our Christian values. Through worship and PSHE, they understand that rules are rooted in love and designed to keep us safe. Our Behaviour Policy encourages children to take responsibility for their actions and use a restorative approach to make amends. Children learn that following rules requires courage, especially when doing the right thing is hard.

Individual Liberty

We nurture children's freedom to make choices in a safe and supportive environment. From Reception onwards, they are encouraged to take ownership of their learning and explore their interests. Through Heartsmart, children learn about personal responsibility, ambition, and self-worth. Our enrichment clubs offer opportunities to discover new talents and celebrate individuality. We teach that true liberty is found in living with hope, guided by love, and strengthened by courage.

Mutual Respect

Respect is central to our inclusive school culture. Children are taught to value others through circle time, My Happy Mind, and restorative practices. They learn to resolve disagreements fairly and support one another with kindness. Our ethos encourages children to be collaborative and understanding, building a community rooted in love and hope.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Through collective worship and a diverse curriculum, children explore a wide range of beliefs, cultures, and values. Our RE curriculum equips them with the knowledge and empathy to appreciate diversity. Tolerance is taught through Heartsmart, My Happy Mind, and circle time, helping children develop the courage to stand against prejudice and build bridges of understanding.

Living Out Our Values

In addition to these core principles, we actively encourage children to live out our Christian values through:

• Service Children Support: We recognise and support the unique experiences of service children, offering pastoral care and opportunities to share their stories, fostering a sense of belonging and hope.
• Jobs and Responsibilities: Children take on meaningful roles within the school, such as monitors, helpers, and eco-warriors. These responsibilities teach them the value of service, leadership, and courage.
• Environmental Stewardship: We teach children to care for God’s creation by looking after our school grounds, recycling, and engaging in eco-projects. This instils a sense of love for the world and hope for a sustainable future.
• Excellent Manners and the Gold Ticket: Children are encouraged to use excellent manners, and those who consistently demonstrate kindness and respect may earn a gold ticket to sit at the lunchtime top table—a joyful celebration of character and courtesy.
• Celebration worship: Every week, we gather to celebrate children who have lived out our school values. These collective worships are a time of joy, encouragement, and hope, where we honour the ways children show love, courage, and respect in their daily lives.
