Art and Design

Values

What Art and Design looks like in our school

Intent

  • To expose  all children to the arts, giving them a chance to experience and participate in a range of creative activities, experiences and events as part of and in addition to the curriculum.
  • To develop interest and curiosity by giving children the opportunity to explore, develop and communicate their own creative ideas and responses. 2
  • To allow children to experiment, invent and create in a ‘safe’ environment where there are no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ results.
  • To encourage children to take risks and express themselves creatively using a wide range of media and situations.
  • To enable pupils to become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
  • To teach children to develop mastery in the key elements of drawing, colour, texture, form, printing and pattern.
  • To develop knowledge and appreciation of the arts, artists and designers that will last a lifetime.
  • To develop their appreciation of the diverse cultural heritage within the school and local community.
  • To help children to ask questions and make personal interpretations of what they have experienced.
  • To enable children to work co-operatively and collaboratively, both as an individual and in groups.
  • To help children share ideas and constructive feedback to develop and refine their work and the work of others.

Implementation

  • The EYFS and National Curriculum forms the basis of teaching and learning and dictates the curriculum content for Art.
  • The Art skills progression and provision map supports planning and ensures there is progression in the development of key skills.
  • Wherever possible,  first-hand experiences and real things are used as a stimulus for art and design activities. New techniques and skills are modelled and examples of work are shown to the children.
  • In group and individual work, pupils have the opportunity to develop, refine and experiment, record and present their ideas and techniques.
  • Children have the opportunity to use a wide range of materials and resources, including ICT and will be supported to use tools and equipment safely and responsibly.
  • Children have the opportunity to work individually, in pairs and in group situations.
  • Task design and access points support all pupils to make progress from their relative starting points.
  • Opportunities for using and extending art skills are built into lessons in other subjects.
  • Vocabulary is explicitly taught.

Inclusion

To meet the diverse needs of all children, art and design planning is thoughtfully adapted to provide appropriate support and foster the development of advanced skills and techniques. These adaptations may include considerations for physical and sensory needs. . Key projects and competitions are made accessible to every child, with necessary adjustments and arrangements in place to ensure full inclusion. A wide range of resources is used to aid understanding, such as real-life objects of reference or visual prompts. The use of visuals  promotes the use of subject-specific vocabulary, enabling all children to confidently discuss and reflect on their own artwork and that of others
