Values

What PE looks like in our school

Intent

  • For the children’s experience of PE to be positive and motivating and inspire them to be physically active.
  • To support children to work cooperatively and competitively.
  • To enable pupils to become physically confident. This supports their health, wellbeing and fitness and provides the foundations for lifelong activity.
  • To develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding of key concepts in PE.
  • To develop the fundamental skills of agility, balance and coordination.
  • To give children every opportunity to succeed and excel in a range of sport and physical activities: games, dance and gymnastics.
  • For all children to understand the importance of good diet and exercise.
  • To offer all children chances to take part and compete in sport and other activities.
  • To support them to build character and learn values such as fairness and resilience along with embedding our school values of Love, Courage and Hope.

Implementation

  • The EYFS and National Curriculum forms the basis of teaching and learning and dictates the curriculum content for PE.
  • The ‘PE skills progression map’ supports planning and ensures there is progression in the development of key skills.
  • New techniques and skills are modelled and examples are shown to the children.
  • In group and individual work, pupils have the opportunity to develop, refine and experiment, record and present their ideas and techniques.
  • Task design and access points support all pupils to make progress from their relative starting points.
  • Opportunities for using and extending PE skills are built into lessons in other subjects.
  • Vocabulary is explicitly taught and modelled to ensure understanding.

Inclusion

At our infant school, we ensure PE lessons are inclusive by adapting activities to meet the needs of every child. We provide a variety of equipment and modify tasks so all pupils can participate confidently, regardless of ability or experience.

Our teachers focus on creating a supportive environment that celebrates effort and progress, encouraging teamwork and enjoyment for everyone. Through careful planning and differentiation, we make sure every child feels valued and has the opportunity to develop their physical skills

Impact

  • Children are motivated to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun.
  • Children have learnt to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom will also enjoy the success of competitive sports.
  • Children are equipped with the necessary skills and a love for sport. They will grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
  • All children have the necessary skills and opportunities to demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.
  • Sporting achievements are shared both in and out of school in Celebration Assembly, so that we are promoting sports and activities, as well as celebrating all levels of success, courage and pride.
  • Children have developed their understanding and skills in PE and movement.
  • Children are able to apply values learnt in PE to other areas of the curriculum and within the classroom.
  • Children have the confident to constructively evaluate their own and others’ skills and know how to progress.
  • Children have the opportunity to develop skills and interests within and outside of the curriculum.
  • All children are exposed to a wide range of sports people as role models for inspiration.
  • Teachers have a deeper understanding of how to teach the skills of PE through the use of detailed medium and short term plans, as well as a bank of behaviour management strategies for PE.
