Learning for Life
Reading is a fundamental life skill. We want to foster a lifelong love of reading and support children to understand the importance of reading for meaning and pleasure in everyday life. It is our intention to create enthusiastic readers who read fluently, accurately and with understanding, demonstrating expression, clarity and confidence.
A love of books and reading underpins our curriculum. We provide a rich diet of stories, poems, rhymes and non-fiction that inspire pupils to read and develop their vocabulary, language comprehension and an appreciation of a wide range of books. We use reading to enrich children’s learning through carefully designed teaching activities that utilise imaginative stories and thought provoking texts.
Our approach to teaching reading is central to this. We use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised as our scheme to teach phonics and early reading. This programme is a consistent and rigorous approach to the teaching of early reading and phonics in FS and KS1. This enables pupils to decode unfamiliar words and read with increased speed and fluency.
